Driving On The Island

Moreton Island is a sand island with no sealed roads. A 4WD is the only
suitable vehicle.
All vehicles driving on Moreton Island require a service permit. The permit must be fixed to the
windscreen of the vehicle at all times. Camping and Service Permits may be purchased from
the
National Parks.

All vehicles must be registered for use on public roads and must stay on the beach or designated
tracks.
All drivers or riders must have appropriate vehicle licences.
Normal traffic rules apply. The maximum speed limit is 60 km/hr. Passengers must be carried in
accordance with vehicle specifications.

4WD Tips Keep these tips in mind while driving on Moreton.
- Beach conditions change constantly and suddenly so drive carefully.
- Travel close to low tide times.
- Drive only on hard sand.
- Beach travel is not always possible, even at low tide.
- Keep to existing tracks. Driving on the dunes is prohibited.
- Be careful crossing creeks, some may be deep.
If in doubt walk across first or don't cross.
- Keep to the left and use indicators.
- Drive slowly near pedestrians as the sound of the
surf may silence your approach.
- Keep a watchful eye for children playing.
- Do not exceed the speed limits.
